Most middle and high school exams do not have a formal “general knowledge” paper, but the topic runs through every subject. Here is a guide to calibrate your level and identify weak areas.
Middle school level
The subject that most uses general knowledge is history-geography-civics. The candidate must master:
History. World War I, rise of fascism, World War II and Holocaust, world from 1945, post-war national history.
Geography. Living in the country and the world, territorial dynamics, regional integration, globalization.
Civics. Values and symbols of democracy, rights and duties, national defense, digital identity, democratic life.

High school level
Several papers draw on general knowledge.
History-geography. Syllabus typically covers the world since 1815. Essay and document analysis.
Specialty history-political science. History, geography, geopolitics, political science. Highly demanding: topics on democracy, borders, media, environment, heritage.
Literature paper. Essay writing assumes being able to place a work in its context. See our article on world history timeline.
Oral presentation. Twenty minutes before a jury on a prepared question. General knowledge supports the argumentation.
Recurring themes
If you build a mock quiz for middle or high school, here are the themes that come back.
History. World wars, decolonization, post-war world, European Union, world after 1989.
Geography. European capitals, rivers, regions, world economic geography.
Science. Evolution, genetics, energy, climate, vaccines.
Arts and literature. Authors on the syllabus, literary movements (Romanticism, Realism, Surrealism), major paintings and works.
Institutions. Constitution, parliament, separation of powers, presidential power.
Effective method
Three principles.
Fifteen minutes of quizzes per day. Better than a two-hour session once a week. Regularity beats intensity.
Review mistakes. A failed question is worth more than a correct one. Note in a journal to review.
Cross-reference formats. Quizzes, textbooks, short videos, podcasts. Diversifying activates different memory zones.
